Hyde offers some of the most competitively priced housing in Greater Manchester whilst sitting right on the doorstep of the Peak District.
With six railway stations and regular bus services, Hyde delivers train journeys to Manchester Piccadilly in under 20 minutes.
Unlike some commuter towns, Hyde retains its own distinct character with a weekly market and plenty of independent shops in Gee Cross.

Hyde is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside, positioned on the eastern edge of Greater Manchester where the urban sprawl meets the western slopes of the Pennines.
The town sits on the River Tame, approximately 6.5 miles east of Manchester city centre and 5 miles north-east of Stockport. With a population of around 35,900 according to the 2021 census, Hyde offers a distinctly different feel from its larger neighbours.
The town’s history is inseparable from the cotton industry that transformed it during the Industrial Revolution. In the late 18th century, Hyde was little more than a cluster of houses known as Red Pump Street, with the nearby settlement of Gee Cross being larger. The opening of the Peak Forest Canal in 1800 and subsequent railway connections accelerated growth dramatically.
Property styles: Hyde’s housing stock reflects its industrial heritage and subsequent suburban development. Victorian and Edwardian terraces dominate the town centre and areas like Newton and Flowery Field, many featuring original stone lintels and bay windows.
Gee Cross offers larger semi-detached and detached properties, including inter-war homes and more recent developments with generous gardens. The Hattersley area provides a mix of post-war housing, while converted mill buildings near the canal offer distinctive apartment living for those seeking something different.
Best streets: Stockport Road in Gee Cross and the roads leading towards Werneth Low, including Higham Lane and Dowson Road, are particularly sought-after for their proximity to open countryside and larger plot sizes. Talbot Road and Mottram Old Road offer well-presented family homes, while the streets around Hyde Park provide period properties within walking distance of the town centre.
Hyde benefits from excellent links to Manchester and neighbouring towns, making it a practical choice for commuters and families alike.
Hyde and its surroundings offer a variety of destinations for those settling in the area, from historic buildings to expansive green spaces.
Hyde’s economy has evolved significantly since its cotton mill heyday, with employment now spread across diverse sectors.
The largest employment categories in Tameside are wholesale and retail (16.9%), followed by health and social work (15.4%), and manufacturing (9.5%). While traditional textile manufacturing has largely disappeared, the area retains engineering firms and food production companies that draw on the region’s industrial skills base.
Tameside Council is one of the borough’s largest employers, with over 9,000 staff across education, social services and administrative functions. Tameside General Hospital in nearby Ashton-under-Lyne provides significant healthcare employment, while schools and colleges across the area offer teaching and support roles. Life science industries have been identified as a growth sector across Tameside and neighbouring Oldham.
