Things to do

Stalybridge lies along the eastern edge of Manchester, right next to the Pennines, with useful connections heading onwards to Leeds, Huddersfield and Sheffield. Originally a critical industrial hub – today it is filled with quiet suburbs, excellent parks, and the twin waterways of the River Tame and Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Stalybridge straddles the line between city and countryside, offering the best of both.

For example, you’ll find the well-kept Stamford Park with its boating lake, flower gardens and crazy golf while the centre of Ashton with its well-loved market and shops are less than a 10 minute drive away. And of course, you can keep heading west along the A635 to reach Manchester city centre, and all that it has to offer.

Most homes in Stalybridge are a mixture of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, semi-detached homes, and some new builds.

Much of the housing stock reflects the wealth and development the area faced as industry grew during the Victorian era.  At the same time, there are also smatterings of stone cottages (both new and old), as well as converted mills and weavers’ cottages.

Desirable streets: Streets like Mottram Road, Demesne Drive, and Brushes Road are known for their desirable properties, including spacious detached and semi-detached houses with larger gardens and modern amenities.

It’s very easy to get around Stalybridge itself, as well as traveling to the nearby towns and cities. Here’s a summary of the options available:

1. Car & Road – The A635, a major road, runs directly through Stalybridge, providing a direct route to Manchester city centre, just 8.8 miles away in about 35 mins. This road also connects you to other important destinations like Leeds (approximately an hour away) and Liverpool (reachable in a little over an hour).

2. Bus – A well-developed bus network operated by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) connects Stalybridge to surrounding towns and villages. Regular services run to Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde, Glossop, and Manchester city centre.

Stalybridge has plenty of local amenities itself, and just down the road you’ll find plenty more in Ashton town centre.

The largest supermarkets include Tesco Superstore on Trinity Street and ALDI on Leech Street. The Ladysmith and Arcades shopping centres are also just a 10-minute car ride away, providing numerous places to shop, eat and drink – including banks, gyms, opticians, health food shops and several cafes & restaurants.

For leisure and fitness, Stalybridge has a surprising wealth of options. For example, there are several large, multi-purpose gyms as well as specialist centres and fitness clubs.

There’s also plenty of places and landmarks to visit in Stalybridge, especially its numerous buildings, facilities and halls created during the industrial revolution.

  • Stamford Park – A large, historic park with beautiful gardens, a boating lake, crazy golf and areas for sport.
  • Stalybridge Country Park – This park offers a stunning landscape to explore along numerous walking trails and open areas; it also opens out into the Pennines for further exploration.
  • Huddersfield Narrow Canal – A scenic canal offering lovely walks, boat trips, and a glimpse into the area’s industrial past. It’s great for a leisurely stroll or cycle along the banks.
  • Cheetham Park – A picturesque, hilly park with woodlands, open spaces, and a children’s play area.

Take a Walk Along the Stalybridge Country Park Trails – Explore the scenic trails of Stalybridge Country Park, which offer stunning views and peaceful walks.

  • Enjoy Live Music at The Live Lounge – Visit this popular venue for live music performances by local bands and artists.
  • Visit Stalybridge Civic Hall Events – Attend events ranging from craft fairs to community theatre productions at the Civic Hall.
